FROM COMPOSER JASON ROBERT BROWN, THE LAST FIVE YEARS TELLS THE STORY OF THE FIVE YEAR RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JAMIE AND CATHY, TOLD IN TWO DIFFERENT TIMELINES. CATHY'S SIDE OF THE STORY IS TOLD IN REVERSE CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, AS THE SHOW BEGINS AT THE END OF THEIR MARRIAGE, AND JAMIE'S IS TOLD CHRONOLOGICALLY, WITH THE PAIR HAVING JUST MET. THE ONLY INTERSECTION OF THESE TIMELINES IS THE MOMENT OF THEIR WEDDING, AND IT IS ALSO THE ONLY MOMENT THAT THE TWO INTERACT. THE LAST FIVE YEARS IS ABOUT TRUST,  COMPANIONSHIP, AND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO GIVE THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE THE TIME THAT THEY DESERVE IN YOUR LIFE.

IN LIGHTING THIS PIECE, I WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT THE EMOTIONAL SHIFTS IN THE SCENES, AS WE FOUND OURSELVES IN A FAIRLY LIMINAL SPACE THAT SHIFTED VERY FREQUENTLY. WE FOUND A GREAT DEAL OF WARMTH IN JOVIAL NUMBERS LIKE 'THE SCHMUEL SONG' AND 'SHIKSA GODDESS', AND LIVED IN A WORLD OF COOL BLUES FOR 'STILL HURTING' AND 'IF I DIDN'T BELIEVE IN YOU'. A CONCEPT THE DIRECTOR WAS INTERESTED IN FOR THIS PIECE INVOLVED HAVING BOTH ACTORS ONSTAGE FOR ALMOST ALL OF THE SCENES, EVEN THOUGH ONLY ONE OF THEM IS TELLING THE STORY AT A TIME, AND SO FOR THE PERSON WHO WAS NOT THE STORYTELLER FOR THE SCENE, WE SELECTIVELY DECIDED WHEN TO LIGHT THE FACE OF THE PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT THE MAIN FOCUS OF THE SCENE- AS IF THEY WERE FROZEN IN TIME.
