UGLY LIES THE BONE IS A STORY ABOUT JESS, A VETERAN RETURNING HOME FOR THE FIRST TIME AFTER SPENDING FOURTEEN MONTHS IN THE HOSPITAL RECOVERING FROM AN EXPLOSION FROM AN IED. JESS BEGINS A VIRTUAL REALITY TREATMENT THERAPY WHICH IS DESIGNED TO FLOOD THE SENSES WITH INFORMATION IN ORDER TO HELP HER WORK THROUGH HER PAIN. AS SHE RECEIVES THIS TREATMENT, SHE IS ALSO ATTEMPTING TO REINTEGRATE HERSELF INTO HER OLD LIFE, AND IS DISCOVERING THAT THE WORLD MOVED ON WITHOUT HER. HER HOME ON THE FLORIDA SPACE COAST WENT THROUGH MAJOR CHANGES AS THE SHUTTLE PROGRAM SHUT DOWN, HER EX- BOYFRIEND GOT MARRIED, AND HER SISTER SEEMS PERFECTLY CONTENT WITH A GUY JESS THINKS IS ABSOLUTE TRASH. THIS STORY IS ABOUT MOVING FORWARD, AND TAKING PAIN STEP BY STEP- MAKING IT MANAGEABLE. BY THE END OF THE PLAY JESS HAS SET FORWARD TOWARDS A NEW BEGINNING, ALLOWING THE PAST TO NOT INHIBIT HER ANYMORE.

THE DESIGN OF THIS SHOW WAS CENTERED ON THE ABSTRACT ELEMENTS OF JESS' WORLD. THE TRANSITIONS BETWEEN LOCATIONS ARE SEAMLESS IN NATURE, AND SO THE WORLD SHIFTS IN PIECES AROUND JESS, LIKE A PULSE- DECONSTRUCTING AND RECONSTRUCTING IN EACH LOCATION. THE AERIAL LANDSCAPE IS COMPOSED OF A SLEW OF PRACTICALS, BOTH INCANDESCENT AND FLUORESCENT. WE USED THE PRACTICALS TO INDICATE MOMENTS OF CROSSOVER BETWEEN THE VIRTUAL WORLD OF JESS' VR TREATMENT AND HER REAL LIFE, AS WELL AS TO EMPHASIZE THE EMOTIONAL QUALITY OF CERTAIN MOMENTS. THESE PRACTICALS ADDED A RAW INTENSITY TO THE DRAMA, AND TIED THE WORLD OF THE ABSTRACT TO THE WORLD OF REALITY.

RON ZIOMEK, OUR SOUND DESIGNER, AND I WORKED CLOSELY ON THE TIMINGS OF OUR TRANSITIONS. WE FELT IT WAS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT THAT LIGHTING, SCENERY, AND SOUND WERE WORKING CONGRUOUSLY IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS WORLD FEEL AS SEAMLESS AS POSSIBLE.
