SMUTA is a new play by Jacob Wasson that chronicles the experience of two gay men who find themselves in a "Pop-up torture chamber" together in an imagined Moscow. It explores themes of safety, friendship, and what it means to be loved in a world that doesn't want you to exist.
This new imagination of SMUTA was performed to a Sold-Out run in REFUGE Nightclub in Bushwick. We crafted an environment that was befitting of a warehouse club, including a light-up floor that served as the primary lighting source for the play. The floor represented the trapped-in-a-cage feeling that the main character experiences throughout the piece, and transforms over the course of the play into a multitude of locations to support his emotional journey.
