La Cocina is a modern ensemble piece that takes place in an upscale commercial kitchen in Manhattan. The play chronicles the lives of the various people who populate this kitchen over the course of one exceptionally stressful shift.
The collective design for La Cocina was to make the kitchen feel like hell. We used a theme of repetition in order to make it feel as though all of the characters were stuck in a cycle of extreme stress. Additionally, we compressed the space with low-hanging overhead lights in order to make it feel as though the characters were in a pressure-cooker environment.
